In this week last year, Flying Cloud became Storming Home’s highest profile runner when winning the G2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot, but her achievements have been topped by Jakkalberry who became his sire’s first Group One winner on Sunday.
The four-year-old Italian-trained colt posted a three-quarter length victory in the Gran Premio di Milano, holding off worthy rivals in the French challenger Getaway and Godolphin’s Campanologist, who was another three-and-a-quarter lengths back in third.
Bred in Italy by Azienda Agricola Allevamento Deni, Jakkalberry is out of the Barathea mare Claba Di San Jore and has already won the G3 Premio Ambrosiano earlier this season. From nine starts he has won five times and he was also third to Mastery, by Darley’s French-based sire Sulamani, in the Derby Italiano last year.
